MC1234566 – Outlook "Contact Masking" will be discontinued on March 31, 2026

Mail[German]Brief information for users and administrators who use Outlook 365. Microsoft recently announced that it will discontinue "contact masking" in Outlook on March 31, 2026.

I came across the post  MC1234566 – Outlook: retiring "Contact Masking" (hide suggested recipients) – March 31, 2026 in the Microsoft 365 Message Center.

This applies to suggested recipients that are taken from the contact list and displayed as suggestions in the To, Cc, and Bcc fields in Outlook. Microsoft explains in its support article that users can hide a suggested recipient in Outlook while addressing an email.

To do this, users select the X next to a name in the list of suggestions for "To/Cc/Bcc" (see image above). This behavior is commonly referred to as "contact masking," according to Microsoft.

Outlook will discontinue the "contact masking" feature, which allows suggested recipients to be hidden, on March 31, 2026. This means that contacts previously hidden by "contact masking" may reappear in the suggestions without a replacement feature being provided.

No action is required on the part of the administrator, but users should be informed and training should be updated accordingly.
