Updates from August 1, blocks Excel hyperlinks

On August 1, 2017 Microsoft has releases a couple of non-security updates for Microsoft Office 2016 (see my blog post Microsoft Office: Non security updates August 1, 2017). Update KB4011051 for Microsoft Office 2016 fixed the following issue:

  • A password expiration notification is displayed to a work or school account even though the password is not expiring soon.

After installing this update hyperlinks in Excel 2016 are broken.

What update KB4011093 is for

Update KB4011093 is for MSI installer based Office 2016 variants (Microsoft Office 2016 Pro Plus), not for Click to run installs. According to the KB article, the following issues are addressed.

  • After you install the August 1, 2017, update for Office 2016 (KB4011051), the hyperlinks functionality may stop working in Excel 2016.

  • For the 32-bit version of Outlook 2016, Office Store redirects you to the web store instead of opening the in-client store.

  • Editing languages and Help languages may be changed unexpectedly. For example, a display language may be missing from the editing languages list even if you have not removed it.

The first item mentions the broken Excel 2016 hyperlinks. The third issue that has been fixed, will also be appreciated by affected users.

Update only available as download

Microsoft doesn't provides the new (repair) patch via Windows Update. Instead, the package is available only via download from Microsoft Download Center.
