7-Zip version 18.6 released

[German]A brief information for users of the packing program 7-Zip. Developer Igor Pavlov has updated the Windows version of the program available for various platforms to version 18.06 as of December 30, 2018 (thanks to blog reader Georg S. for the tip).

The open source program is free of charge and supports the most important archive formats. The program is offered on this website. Details about version 18.6 can be found here:

  • The speed for LZMA/LZMA2 compressing was increased by 3-10%,
and there are minor changes in compression ratio.
  • Some bugs were fixed.
  • The bug in 7-Zip 18.02-18.05 was fixed: there was memory leak in xz decoder.
  • 7-Zip 18.02-18.05 used only one CPU thread for bz2 archive creation.

I had already warned about the previous versions (see Security-Risk: Avoid 7-Zip). Meanwhile the developer seems to have improved the security of his code. Regarding the problems with the .exe installer (DLL hijacking) my tip: Use the .msi installer instead of the .exe version. This avoids DLL hijacking.

I followed your link to download 7-Zip. On this site there is only the .exe installer. Please tell me where to find the .msi installer.

    Thanks for your help.
