Microsoft’s plans for a modern operating system

At Computex 2019 Microsoft's representatives has outlined within a key note a few ideas about a modern operating system for modern devices (probably for the time after Windows 10.

A few details may be read within this blog post. The message: 'We need a modern operating system for modern PCs'. But that document contains a lot of  marketing buzz, that won't allow to understand the details. The modern Microsoft operating system is supposed to consist of a core combined with additional functions, the so-called enablers.

Updates should be performed invisibly in the background. Microsoft speaks of this as a deterministic update experience, which should carry out updates reliably, immediately and without interruptions. This could be an indication that Microsoft could finally eliminate the need to restart during the update installation by making changes to the update mechanisms. The promise of reliable updates has been on Microsoft's lips for so long that hardly any observer would ever expect proof to be given.

This modern operating system, still to be developed, is supposed to be 'secure' by default over its lifetime and protect the user from malicious attacks, since applications and enablers are separated from the operating system core. Of course, such a device with its modern operating system must always be online via Wifi and/or LTE 5G and work with cloud applications. According to Microsoft, all of a user's devices should be connected to each other. The modern operating system can be operated with pen, voice and touch and can contain AI functions.

All in all, however, it is more likely to be a string of flowery marketing slogans with a 'knock on the bush' than precise indications of where to go. Reading that stuff gave me the first though: They have used an old presentation about Windows 10 from 2015 – some parts sound familiar. It is interesting, however, that Microsoft employees did not use the word 'Windows' at the keynote in connection with the plans for the modern operating system for future devices.

    I am curious Gunter,

Do you really think that Microsoft is interested in building another Utility(in the form of a World Wide OS)?

They already have one that they don't want, coming out of Gates vision of a "Computer on every desk" vision. Some how he missed the point that that ultimately turns into an Utility OS. Everyone is trying to get out of the Utility mode they find themselves in. I wonder why? At the end of the day there is no money in an utility.

Microsoft is now loathed to pour very much money into W 10 and we are seeing the results.

Here in NA Utility Companies can't sell stock, the best they can do is debentures a Bond plus instrument but mostly they offer Bonds. Why? No real capital gains. Mostly they have to plow the profits back into the utility….

    Best Regards,

    Crysta

Just think of a Linux kernel, add a window manager and the ability, to run PWA apps and Win32 applications – and you have your OS.

Windows 10 comes with Linux subsystem. And Microsoft have had a laboratory project Drawbridge, where they used pico processes with a MinWin kernel, to run Win32 apps virtualized.
