Skype for Business Online: To be retired at July 31, 2021

Skype[German]At the end of July 2021, i.e. in 2 years, Skype for Business Online will be retired. Then the service will be replaced by teams. In addition, Microsoft plans Skype for Consumer Interop with an interoperation possibility for teams.

It's no secret that Microsoft will replace Skype for Business with teams. Skype for Business Online is the service used by Skype for Business client to handle messenger services such as telephony, video telephony, etc. Now Microsoft announced of the retirement of Skype for Business Online in this tech community article.

  • Skype for Business Online will be discontinued on July 31 , 2021 and after that date the Service will no longer be available. Until then, current Skype for Business Online customers will not experience any changes in the service and will be able to continue to add new users as needed.
  • However, as of September 1, 2019, Microsoft will begin to integrate all new Office 365 customers directly into teams so that chat, meetings and calls can be made through this platform.

According to Microsoft, neither Skype Consumer Service nor Skype for Business Server are affected by this announcement. The Techcommunity article also provides some explanations on the transition to teams. Microsoft wants to connect teams via Skype Consumer Interop. This will allow users of the two services Teams and Skype Consumer to communicate via both chat and calls.  Teams and Skype Consumer Interop will be available in teams in the first quarter of calendar year 2020.
