OneNote 2016 was already categorized as dying, after Microsoft started to replace OneNote 2016 in its products Office 365 and Office 2019 with the Windows 10 OneNote UWP app. However, users could still download OneNote 2016 as a Windows application free of charge from the websites.

Now MSPU reported here  about the announcement of the extension of support for OneNote 2016. Microsoft is aligning support for OneNote 2016 with the Office 2019 support cycle:

New support dates for OneNote 2016 now align with Office 2019 (October 10, 2023 for mainstream support and October 14, 2025 for extended support).

Until October 10, 2023 there will be a mainstream support where updates should also fix bugs. For example, a dark mode has been announced for the program. On Dr. Windows there are a few more details. At thurrott.com are more details.

The extended support with security updates will run until October 14, 2025. Then the support for Office 2019 will also end. The year 2025 will be exciting because Microsoft wants to phase out many products there and plans to only rely on the cloud and subscription models.

Microsoft has also announced that it will revise the Office apps for Android and iOS. Instead of several apps, the functions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint will be bundled in one app.
