Windows: Update from 2019 for VMware offered again (Jan. 5, 2021)

win7[English]Just a short information from a blog reader who is being re-offered a 2019 update for VMware as of January 5, 2021. I am interested in whether this is an isolated case or affects more users.

German blog reader Ekkehard F. contacted me by email yesterday and pointed out the issue. He is using VMware Workstation 14 Player on a Windows 7 without ESU license. In addition he writes:

my Windows 7 machine (without ESU or 0patch) wants to install an update from VMware declared as "Important", which is from July 2019. However, it is newly offered with date 05 January 2021.

Here, only VMware Workstation 14 Player (freeware) is installed in the current version 14.1.8 build-14921873

The reader has sent the following screenshot – just click on the image to enlarge. Offered is the update VMware, Inc. – System – 9.8.16.0 with the release date January 5, 2021.

It is said to be 'VMware VMCI Bus' chipset drivers in VMware Tools for VMware (see this VMware post). This VMware forum post first mentions this VMware system update in 2019.

Addendum: I checked on my Windows 7 machine with ESU – there the update is also offered. VMware Workstation is installed on the machine. Noticeable are the mixed information (German, English) in the above screenshot. In addition, both links offered in the Windows Update window are invalid – I just tested this.

The question that arises: Have any of you been offered this update as well? Any clues as to why the update is being deployed again?

I get it too on Windows 8.1

despite the mentioned last updated date, the actual download cab files are digitally signed by Microsoft on June 2020

i think Microsoft removed its sha1 digital signature, keeping only sha2, thus the driver is re-released, and its now pushed/published to Wndos Update
