Skype for Business Online is the service behind Skype that the Skype for Business client accesses to directly handle messenger services such as telephony, video calling, etc. The announcement of the replacement of Skype for Business Online was made in this tech community post

  • Skype for Business Online will be discontinued on July 31, 2021, and after that date, the service will no longer be available. Until then, current Skype for Business Online customers will not experience any changes to the service, and they can continue to add new users as needed.
  • However, starting Sept. 1, 2019, Microsoft will begin integrating all new Office 365 customers directly into Teams, so chat, meetings and calls will happen through that platform.

According to Microsoft, neither Skype Consumer Service nor Skype for Business Server will be affected by this announcement. (via)
