Boxcryptor: Free accounts will be deactivated on January 31, 2023

[German]The German encryption service Boxcryptor is being over taken by Dropbox. New customers are already no longer accepted – subscriptions expire and the service has done itself in as an "encryptor" for cloud uploads. A German blog reader informed me, that Boxcryptor has begun to inform users, that free ccounts will be shut down on January 31, 2023.

What is Boxcryptor?

Boxcryptor

is a file encryption software and is particularly used for synchronization with a variety of cloud storage. Boxcryptor was first released on the Dropbox forum on August 5, 2011. After over 1,000 downloads within a week, the startup came up with the idea. The software was then offered by Secomba GmbH as a freemium solution – free for private use – companies had to take out a subscription, but were provided with additional features such as two-factor authentication in return.

Then, at the beginning of December 2022, it became known that Boxcryptor had been purchased by the provider Dropbox. The provider wants to provide the encryption solution for its own offer to its customers. This marked the end of this service – I had reported on the facts in the blog post Encryption solution Boxcryptor purchased from Dropbox.

One Response to Boxcryptor: Free accounts will be deactivated on January 31, 2023

  1. Carlo says:

I think if the decryption key (free license) does not expire (?) you can continue to use Boxcryptor in local mode (so without linking it to the account) beyond Jan. 31 without any problems. Of course, you will not receive any more updates. . The same with the Android version of the program.
