It wasn't really a very long performance, which was granted to Microsoft's voice assistant Cortana in Windows. Considered absolutely annoying by many users, Cortana was praised by Microsoft as the "philosopher's stone". Microsoft even tried to foist this feature on users during Windows setup. But Cortana did not really become a success for Microsoft.
For some time now, it has been indicated that Microsoft will phase out Cortana. Now it becomes clear, the Cortana will be out of support in Windows later in 2023, as Microsoft explained. Twitter user Per Bylund has spotted the support post End of support for Cortana in Windows in Windows and shared this on Twitter.
Microsoft announces there the following changes to Windows that will affect users of the Cortana app:
- Starting at the end of 2023, Cortana will no longer be supported as a standalone app in Windows.
- However, users will still be able to access productivity features in Windows and Edge, but they will now have advanced AI capabilities.
Microsoft wants to make sure that users will still get support for tasks, calendar entries and editing their emails. However, AI is now used instead of Cortana – in the support article, Redmond explains which new features (Voice Access for Windows 11, Bing search, Windows Copilot) will provide user support in the future. Microsoft states that this change only affects Cortana in Windows. Cortana features will continue to be available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams Display and Microsoft Teams Rooms (until they are discontinued there as well). Anyone among the readers who will miss Cortana?
