SharePoint Online outage on July 25, 2023 due to incorrect TLS certificate

[German]On July 24, 2023, there was a brief outage of SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. After two hours, Microsoft informed us that the problem was related to an update and had already been corrected. In the meantime, it has been determined that an incorrect TLS certificate that was distributed was the cause.

hadn't noticed – the glitch must have happened later in the evening of July 24, 2023. On Twitter, someone complains about a problem:

All of a sudden my sharepoint com site has a bad certificate.. looks like the cert is a *.sharepoint.de one.
people seem to be messing up. A known problem ?!

The SharePoint Online site has an invalid certificate. On Twitter, Microsoft 365 Status then posted the following message a good 9 hours ago.

@MSFT365Status: We're investigating an issue affecting access to SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Further detail can be found in the Microsoft 365 admin center under SP659992 or OD659999.

So problems were reported when accessing SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft launched an investigation. Just two hours later, the all-clear was given because Microsoft had fixed the problem.

@MSFT365Status: We determined that a configuration issue within a recent update caused the impact, and we've confirmed impact is now resolved. More details can be found in the Microsoft 365 admin center under SP659992 or OD659999.

The disruption seems to have affected users worldwide (even the British Sun reported). The French medium it.connect.fr reports here that the online services were down for about 10 minutes at around 21:00 German time. Users of the online versions of SharePoint and OneDrive could not reach the services, and a certificate problem was indicated. Microsoft is said to have released the following information:

Users may have seen a certificate error when trying to access SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. Users may also have been unable to access or submit files in Microsoft Teams.

There it also says that Teams is also affected. However, a good 10 minutes after this report, Microsoft had already given the all-clear because the problem had been fixed. Due to a technical error, the domain "sharepoint.com" was assigned a TLS certificate for the domain "*.sharepoint.de" with the extension specific to Germany. Of course, this leads to the fact that users could no longer access the services.

The colleagues from Bleeping Computer have taken up the issue in the blog post Microsoft Sharepoint outage caused by use of wrong TLS certificate and published the following screenshot of an error message.

There are also some messages on reddit.com like this one, where the certificate problem is also addressed. Fortunately, Microsoft was able to solve the problem in the short term.
