Windows[German]Microsoft has released version 0.72 of its free PowerToys for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on August 1, 2023. I have here in the blog no longer reported about these tools and the accompanying weekly water levels, especially since the software often came along with bugs and then caused problems. With the version 0.72 was optimized yes with the size of the installations as well as with the installation directory. Here is an overview of the current status.

PowerToys 0.72

On August 1, 2023 PowerToys version 0.72 has been released. There are a few highlights, what's changed and fixed:

Greatly reduce the installed space of PowerToys by making the utilities use the same installation path. Compared to 0.71, the 0.72 x64 version of PowerToys reduces the size shown under "Installed Apps" from 1.15 GB to 785 MB and the size in the File Explorer properties for the installation folder from 3.10 GB to 554 MB.

This seems to me to be the most important change to the toolset in question. Furthermore, the developers also list the following new features in version 0.72:

  • Value Generator; a new PowerToys Run plugin that generates hashes and GUID values.
  • Mouse Highlighter has received a new feature that allows a highlight to always follow the mouse pointer.
  • PowerRename has been reworked to support a larger number of files without crashing.

It's amazing, that they already has a PowerRenamer, that's crashing during renaming a bunch of files. The GitHub page lists a couple of small improvements and bug fixes as well as know issues. The details can be read on the Github page, where the 64 bit installer for ARM and X64 cpus may be downloaded.

The PowerToys were free programs under Windows 95/98, with which certain Windows functions could be optimized or customized. Inspired by the Windows 95 PowerToys project, some developers have begun to release also a free and open source tool set for Windows 10 / 11 under this name.
