Google Chrome 118.0.5993.117/.118

Chrome[German]Google has released updates to Google Chrome Browser 118 in the Stable and Extended channels for Mac, Linux, and Windows as of October 24, 2023. The Chrome browser's Android app has also been updated. The updates include a security fix,. Here is an overview of these updates. And there is a reference to Google`s planned IP protection feature, that has been just announced.

Google Chrome 118.0.5993.117/.118

The release is introduced here in the Google blog. The stable channel has been updated to version 118.0.5993.117 for macOS and Linux. For Windows, the update updates the browser to version 118.0.5993.117/.118.

Furthermore, the Extended Stable Channel for Windows has been updated to version 118.0.5993.118 and for Mac to version 118.0.5993.117. Google claims to have fixed two vulnerabilities. One is stated as follows:

[$3000][1491296] High CVE-2023-5472: Use after free in Profiles.

Chrome will be rolled out to systems via the automatic update feature over the next few days and weeks. One can (and in this case should) also update the browser manually (via the menu and the About Google Chrome command). The latest build of the Chrome browser can also be downloaded here.

Chrome for Android 118.0.5993.111

According to this Google post, Google Chrome for Android has been updated to version 118.0.5993.111 and will be distributed via update in the next few days. This version includes stability and performance improvements, as well as the same security fixes as mentioned above for the desktop versions of the browser.

Because it just fits: Google will soon disguise surfers' IP addresses from the websites they visit via a kind of proxy (see Google's IP Protection— Bleeping Computer picked it up here. Sounds good at a first glance, but has the consequence that Google can act as a "big brother" …
