Office Updates (April 2, 2024)

[German]On April 2, 2024 (first Tuesday of the month), Microsoft released non-security updates for Microsoft Office 2016 and various programs. I'll summarize some information about these updates here in the blog (thanks to the reader for the hint).

Regular Office update

On the first Tuesday of every month, Microsoft releases non-security updates for versions of Microsoft Office that are still supported. The updates apply to the installable MSI version of Office and are delivered via Windows Update. Click-to-run packages receive the updates via other channels. For this reason, Office 2019 no longer appears in the list below, where only click-to-run installers are available. Microsoft lists the MSI updates on this page.

Office 2016

The packages are distributed automatically via Windows Update, but can also be downloaded and installed manually via the linked KB articles.

  • KB5002525: Update for Microsoft Access 2016; This update fixes an extended range of supported characters that are displayed incorrectly in Microsoft Access charts. Details can be found in the linked support article.
  • KB5002340: Update for Microsoft Office 2016; This update fixes an extended range of supported characters that display as an underscore (_) when you export to a text file from Microsoft Access.
  • KB5002577: Update for Microsoft Excel 2016; This update fixes a problem with the handling of surrogate pairs when users open text files in which rows start with an extended range of supported characters in the range above U+10,000.
  • KB5002050: Update for Microsoft Office 2016; This update fixes an issue where Microsoft OneNote cannot safely unload LibletAPI across multiple DLLs that it owns. After installing this update, LibletAPI cannot be safely initialized in multiple OneNote DLLs by overriding the initialization in a locked, reference-counted code block.
  • KB5002388: Update for Microsoft Office 2016; This update fixes an extended range of supported characters that are displayed incorrectly in Microsoft Access charts.
  • KB5002572: Update for Microsoft Office 2016; Removes the object type Organizational Chart Add-In for Microsoft Office programs due to insufficient support for an extended range of supported characters.
  • KB5002452: Update for Microsoft Office 2016: This update removes the Organizational Chart Add-In object type for Microsoft Office programs due to insufficient support for an extended range of supported characters.
  • KB5002545: Update for Microsoft OneNote 2016; This update fixes an extended range of supported characters for sending files as attachments in the Microsoft OneNote desktop application. This update also includes a fix for an issue in OneNote 2016, described in the support article, where the OneNote LibletAPI library cannot be safely unloaded. To fully resolve this issue, KB5002050  must be installed together with this update.
  • KB5002574: Update for Microsoft Outlook 2016; Introduces a new group policy for blocking the external card loop function (card loops). Details on the policy are described in the support article.
  • KB5002568: Update for Microsoft PowerPoint 2016; This update disables the features listed in the support article in Microsoft Office 2016 for some specific languages to avoid a file corruption issue.
  • KB5002571: Update for Microsoft Word 2016; Updates the OLE link to better align support for an extended character range.

The update(s) are provided automatically via Windows Update, but can also be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center and installed manually. Office 2016 dropped out of mainstream support on October 13, 2020, but will continue to receive security updates until October 14, 2025. There are no more updates for Office 2013.
