Windows 11 23H2 is now generally available – new "Checkpoint" updates announced

Windows[German]Microsoft announced on July 17, 2024 that Windows 11 version 23H2 is now available for all compatible devices. All restrictions in this regard were lifted on this date. Anyone with a compatible device can check for updates – and if there are no blocks (due to hardware and software incompatibilities), the client will be updated. In some cases, systems are also updated automatically. Microsoft has also announced new cumulative "checkpoint" updates for Windows 11 24H2 in the future.

Windows 11 23H2 generally available

The availability announcement can be found in the Windows 11 Health Status Dashboard (see screenshot below). It states on July 17, 2024 that Windows 11, version 23H2 (Windows 11 2023 Update) is now generally available to all users with eligible devices.

The feature update is offered when the systems check for updates. In addition to the annual updates, devices running version 23H2 will receive new features and improvements (arguably the Moments updates) more frequently via Windows Update.

Eligible Windows 11 Home and Pro devices that are not managed by IT departments will automatically receive the feature update to Windows 11 version 23H2 as soon as the end of support is reached or approximately three months before.

If you have a system with a Windows 10 Home or Pro device that is eligible for the upgrade, you can already check whether the upgrade to Windows 11 version 23H2 is possible. To do this, open the Windows Update category in the settings and then select the Check for updates button. If the function update is available for the system, the option to download and install is displayed.

Cumulative "Checkpoint" updates announced

Once again, there is a "promise" of smaller cumulative updates coming in late 2024 for Windows Server 2025 and Windows 11, version 24H2 or later. This new "checkpoint" update type contains security fixes and new features via smaller, incremental packages. The packages only contain changes that have been added since the last cumulative checkpoint update.

Microsoft hopes to save memory on the systems and transmission bandwidth. The new feature is explained in the support article Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates from July 15, 2024 in the Windows 11 Health Status Dashboard. (via)
