Microsoft Teams Classic expires on July 1, 2025

Teams[German]Microsoft will soon block Microsoft Teams clients that have not been updated for 90 days. On July 1, 2025, however, users who are still using the old Microsoft Teams Classic (1.0) client are threatened with the end. After this date, this client will no longer be available and will no longer work. An update to the Teams New (2.0) client will be required.

I recently referred to the 90-day update rule for Teams clients in the blog post Microsoft Teams clients older than 90 days will soon be blocked; here are the details. The campaign has been running since mid-April 2025 and should be completed by mid-May 2025.

However, there is a second deadline that administrators in companies need to be aware of. If the old Microsoft Teams Classic Classic (Teams 1.0) is still being used, the end is coming.

Microsoft Teams Classic

Microsoft has already published the entry MC1059667 mit dem Titel Action required: Classic Microsoft Teams end of availability starts July 1, 2025 in the Microsoft 365 Message Center on April 21, 2025.

The Microsoft Teams Classic client will no longer be available on Mac and Windows desktops from July 1, 2025. Users will need to upgrade to the new Teams (Teams New 2.0) or use Teams on the web to avoid interruption of functionality.

The new Microsoft Teams 2.0 client was already presented as "mandatory" by Microsoft last year (see New Microsoft Teams 2.0 client mandatory from April 1, 2024). Many administrators tried to avoid switching from Teams Classic to the new Teams 2.0 client had numerous bugs.

But as of July 1, 2025, the old Teams client will be discontinued, as its users will be blocked from using Classic Teams. Users will also no longer be able to remove the blocking message displayed in the client or use the classic Teams desktop app. Users must therefore update to Teams 2.0 as a client by the deadline.

Microsoft has linked a script in the message that administrators can use to identify devices that need to be updated. Is there anyone else among the readership who relies on the Teams Classic client? What is the situation with the Teams New 2.0 client? Have the biggest problems there been fixed?
