Windows 10 21H2/22H2: KB5001716 refreshes update components

Windows[German]Microsoft has started to deploy the KB5001716 update to machines running Windows 10 version 21H2 and 22H2 over the last few days. The KB5001716 update is an update that refreshes the update components so that the systems can switch to Windows 11 24H2. Here is a brief overview of the situation.

Reports on the installation of update KB5001716

German blog reader KB500 reported on June 27, 2025 in a comment: ""Windows 10 is distributing/installing KB5001716 again." He then selected Continue updates as an option and the KB package in question was installed with a few cmd windows that popped up briefly. The reader suspects that it is probably a new version of the update because the KB5001716 update has already been installed 3 times in 2024.

The colleagues from deskmodder.de also mention in this article from June 28, 2025 that the update KB5001716 is offered and installed again.

What does update KB5001716 do?

Update KB5001716 refreshes the Update Service components.

The update is intended to help systems that are still running on older Windows versions and for which support has expired to upgrade to newer Windows builds. For most Windows 10 systems, this should result in an upgrade to Windows 11 if this platform is supported by the hardware. The update no longer really makes sense for many systems with Windows 10 imho.

The description states that after installing the update, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates on the device. This applies if the support of the currently installed Windows version is approaching the end of support or has already expired.

System shows upgrade stopper

After installing this update, Windows may periodically display a notification informing the user of issues that may prevent Windows Update from keeping the device up to date and protecting against current threats, according to Microsoft.

Warning about end of support and minimum hardware requirements

For example, a notification may appear informing users that the device is currently running a version of Windows that has reached the end of its support lifecycle, or that the device does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the currently installed version of Windows.

The update is currently available for Windows 10

This update is currently only available for Windows 10 versions 21H2 (Enterprise only) and Windows 10 22H2 (all versions). Has anyone received the update.

Since our Windows 10 22H2 laptops are not upgradeable, we have 3 releases (6/25, 10/24, 5/24) of KB5001716 blocked with Windows Automatic Update Manager.
