Windows 10 22H2/Windows 11 23H2-25H2: Preview Updates (September 23/25/29, 2025)

Windows[German]Microsoft released the optional cumulative (preview) update KB5065790 for Windows 11 23H2 on September 23, 2025. For Windows 10 22H2, the preview update KB5066198 was not released until September 25, 2025. The preview update KB5065789 for Windows 11 24H2/25H2 was released on September 29, 2025. These preview updates contain fixes that can be tested and then rolled out generally as fixes in the following month. This will eliminate the SMBv1 bug.

Please note that preview updates must be manually downloaded and installed by default (although Windows 11 version 22H2 and later includes options for automatic installation).

Preview-Update KB5065789 für Windows 11 24H2/25H2

The list of updates for Windows 11 can be viewed on this Microsoft page. The preview update KB5065789 for Windows 11 version 24H2 was released on September 29. Microsoft refers to the improvements and fixes as highlights and a gradual rollout (not available to all users) as well as a normal rollout (available to all users).

  • [Hyper-V] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that affects starting Hyper-V virtual machines with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) on ARM64 devices running supported versions of Windows. This can occur after installing KB5064081.
  • Fixed: Addresses an issue in File Explorer where tooltips in the Recent section displayed certain extended Unicode characters—such as Chinese characters from Extension B through Extension F and other four-byte characters—as square boxes or unreadable symbols.
  • [Networking (known issue)]​​​​​​​ Fixed: This update addresses an issue where you might not be able to connect to shared files and folders if you're using the Server Message Block (SMB) v1 protocol on NetBIOS over TCP/IP NetBIOS (NetBT). This can happen after installing update KB5065426.
  • [Servicing] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that disrupted Windows Update for customers using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
  • [Windows Hello] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that affects Windows Hello PIN setup with error 0x80090010 on devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID domains after installing Windows updates released on or after KB5060842.

Preview update KB5065790 for Windows 11 23H2

The list of updates for Windows 11 can be viewed on this Microsoft page. For Windows 11 version 24H2, the out-of-band update KB5068221 was already released on September 22, 2025 (see Windows 11 24H2: Out-of-band update KB5068221). For Windows 11 version 23H2, the preview update KB5065790 was released on September 23, 2025. Microsoft specifies the following fixes for the normal rollout:

  • [Authentication] Fixed: An issue that caused Windows sign-in screen to stop responding after a user enters the SIM PIN during sign-in using a mobile broadband connection.
  • [Browser] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Edge when running in Internet Explorer compatibility mode. It stops responding due to certain same-domain redirects.
  • [Country and Operator Settings Asset (COSA)] Fixed: This update brings profiles up to date for certain mobile operators.
  • [Display Kernel] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that affects display configuration changes during Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions with multiple monitors. The system might shut down unexpectedly when disconnected from a docking station during a streaming session.
  • [Input]  
    • Fixed: An issue where some characters didn't display correctly when using the Chinese Input Method Editor (IME).
    • Fixed:  This update addresses an issue where certain Chinese characters appeared as empty boxes in some text fields, such as those used in Connection Manager Administration Kit, when a character limit was set.
  • [Networking (known issue)] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where you might not be able to connect to shared files and folders if you're using the Server Message Block (SMB) v1 protocol on NetBIOS over TCP/IP NetBIOS (NetBT). This can happen after installing update KB5065431.
  • [Printer] Fixed: An issue where viewing the printer queue in Settings for a shared printer caused the Print Queue user interface to stop working.
  • [System services and reliability] Fixed: Addresses an issue that caused McpManagement service to appear without a description on Windows.

Windows 10 Preview Update KB5066198

Information about Windows 10 updates can be found on the Windows 10 Update History page. The KB5066198 update from September 25, 2025, rolls out a whole series of fixes.

  • [SMBv1 protocol connectivity (known issue)] Fixed: An issue where you might not be able to connect to shared files and folders if you're using the Server Message Block (SMB) v1 protocol on NetBIOS over TCP/IP NetBIOS (NetBT). This can happen after installing update KB5065429.
  • [Autopilot Enrollment Status Page (ESP) (known issue)] Fixed: An issue when using Windows Autopilot to deploy Windows 10, version 22H2 to devices with the Enrollment Status Page (ESP) configured might find that the ESP doesn't load during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).

The update is available via Windows Update (when searching for optional updates), but can also be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
