Windows 10: WinRE Update KB5075039 fixes issue from Oct. 2025

Windows[German]Microsoft has re-released update KB5075039 (Windows Recovery Environment  update) for Windows 10 once again on March 3, 2026. It is a WinRE patch that is intended to provide Windows 10, which fell out of support in October 2025, with a working recovery environment again. Here is some brief information on the matter.

A bug crept in with the installation of the dynamic security update KB5067039 (see Windows 10/11 Recovery Updates (October 14, 2025)). This update contained a faulty version 10.0.26100.6891 of the USBHUB3.SYS driver. After installing the update, USB keyboards and USB mice could no longer be used in Win RE (Windows Repair Environment). Microsoft confirmed this bug on October 17, 2025. I addressed this in the blog post Windows 10/11: USB keyboard/mouse doesn't work properly in WinRE.

In mid-January 2026, a new recovery updates were released for Windows 10 and Windows 11. For Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2, update KB5075039 was released on January 15, 2026 (see Windows 10/11: Recovery-Updates (13. – 15. Jan. 2026)). The Windows Recovery Environment update KB5075039 for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2 was distributed via Windows Update and was supposed to automatically apply the Safe OS Dynamic Update (KB5073933) to the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) of a running PC. But that didn't fix the issue.

Windows 10 update KB5073933 (March 3, März 2026)

I was quite surprised to read here and here that Microsoft has re-released update KB5073933 for Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 ESU and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 on March 3, 2026.

Windows 10-Update KB5073933

In its support article, Microsoft states that this update fixes a bug in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) that prevents this environment from starting at all if the Windows 10 WinRE update KB5068164 from October 14, 2025, is installed. So if you are running Windows 10 22H2 and ESU support, you should definitely install the KB5073933 update from March 3, 2026.
