Thunderbird 78.6.0 released

[German]The developers of the Thunderbird email client have released Thunderbird 78.6.0 on December 15, 2020. This is a maintenance update for the 78 main version of the email client, which fixes bugs and closes security holes.

According to the release notes the only new feature is: MailExtensions: Added browser.windows.openDefaultBrowser(). In addition there are the following changes: 

  • Thunderbird now only displays quota overrun notices in the main window
  • MailExtensions: Menu API enabled in messages that are currently being composed
  • MailExtensions:Honor allowScriptsToClose argument in windows.create API function
  • MailExtensions: APIs that return an accountId reflect the account the message belongs to, not what is stored in the message headers

In addition, the following bug fixes were made:

  • Keyboard shortcut to toggle message status "read" is not displayed in menus
  • OpenPGP: After importing a secret key, the key manager displayed the properties of the wrong key
  • OpenPGP: Improvements in inline PGP parsing
  • OpenPGP: Online determination of keys via Key Manager sometimes failed under Linux
  • OpenPGP: Encrypted attachment "Decrypt and Open/Save as" did not work
  • OpenPGP: Importing keys failed under macOS
  • OpenPGP: Verification of clearly signed UTF-8 text failed
  • Address Book: Some columns incorrectly displayed no data
  • Address Book: Address Book view was not updated after changing the name format in the menu
  • Calendar: An ICS file could not be imported into a CalDAV calendar
  • Calendar: In a new profile two "Home" calendars were visible
  • Calendar: Dark theme was incomplete on Linux
  • Dark theme was not applied to popups for new email notifications
  • Folder icon, message list and sidebar for contacts visually improved
  • MailExtensions: HTTP refresh in browser content tabs did not work
  • MailExtensions: messageDisplayScripts could not be executed in the main window

In addition, there are some closed vulnerabilities, which are documented here. Unresolved is the problem that Thunderbird runs sluggishly under macOS Big Sur.

  • Windows: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
  • Mac: Mac OS X 10.9 or higher
  • Linux: GTK+ 3.4 or higher
