Windows 11 24H2: Global rollout on compatible systems

Windows[German]Short addendum from the end of last week. Microsoft has generally released Windows 11 24H2 and is rolling out this operating system version to all systems that are classified as compatible. This means that more systems will now automatically be offered the upgrade to this Windows 11 version.

General availability announced

I had seen it on various websites – the following tweet addresses  – what Microsoft announced in the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Status dashboard on May 2, 2025.

Windows 11 24H2 Rollout

The relevant paragraph on the status site says that the final phase of the phased rollout for version 24H2 has been reached. Windows 11, version 24H2, also known as the Windows 11 2024 Update, is now generally available via Windows Update.

Manual upgrade to Windows 11 24H2

Users who have a suitable Windows 10 or Windows 11 system can check for the Windows 11 24H2 update. To do this, select the Check for updates option under Settings > Windows Update. If the device in question is ready for the update, the option to download and install the upgrade to Windows 11 version 24H2 will be displayed.

Microsoft writes that users should note that the update to Windows 11 version 24H2 is temporarily not displayed on some devices. This applies to all cases in which an incompatibility is detected.

Automatic upgrade possible

Microsoft also states that compatible devices with the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, versions 23H2, 22H2 and 21H2, which are not managed by IT departments, will automatically receive the update to version 24H2. Users can then choose the time to restart the device or postpone the update.

Copilot+PC devices with new features

According to Microsoft, the new features in Windows 11 24H2 for Copilot+ PC devices will be rolled out gradually to selected devices and markets. The plan is to start with systems that are registered in the Windows Insider Community. Microsoft points out that the availability of the new function may vary depending on the silicon platform.

Block an upgrade

Systems managed by administrators in corporate environments will only receive the upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 after IT has approved it. This is to ensure that the systems are compatible and have been extensively tested by IT prior to rollout.

For unmanaged systems that are compatible and running Windows 11 22H2 – 23H2, users don't actually have any controls in Windows 11 installation to prevent compatible systems from being upgraded. However, one option I can think of is to disable TPM in the BIOS/UEFI. Then the system is no longer compatible and an upgrade is not possible. Whether this path is feasible (e.g. a used fTPM can exclude this) must be checked on a case-by-case basis..

One Response to Windows 11 24H2: Global rollout on compatible systems

  1. yanta says:

24H2 is an unmitigated disaster. The so-called "known issues" list, is grossly incomplete. I've been testing 24H2 for 3 months and there are many, many issues that are not on that list, including ridiculous issues like having to rename sound files if you want to have Windows play anything other than the default.

Calling it ready for general availability is profoundly premature.
