Patchday: Updates for Windows 7/8.1 (December 12, 2017)

Windows Update[German]On December 12, 2017, Microsoft released a couple of updates for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and the corresponding Windows Server versions. Here is an overview what's patched.

Updates for Windows 7 SP1/Server 2008 R2 SP1

For Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 updates KB4054518 and KB4054521 has been released. The update history for Windows 7 may be found on this Microsoft site.

KB4054518 (Monthly Rollup) for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Update KB4054518 (December 12, 2017, Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) contains improvements and bug fixes also contained within October 2017 update. Here are the fixes:

  • Addresses issue where users of SQL Server Reporting Services may not be able to use the scrollbar in a drop-down list.
  • Addresses additional issues with updated time zone information.
  • Security updates to the Microsoft Scripting Engine and Windows Server.

The problems with SQL Server Reporting Services has been Known Issues since the November 2017 update. Microsoft states that no Known Issues related to this update are known. The update is automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update. Alternatively, the package can be downloaded for manual install from Microsoft Update Catalog.

KB4054521 (Security-only update) for Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 SP1

Update KB4054521 (December 12, 2017, Security Only Update for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) addresses the same security issues as update KB4054518 (but does not fix the SQL Server Reporting Services issues). Again, Microsoft is not aware of any problems with the update. This update is available via WSUS or can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Updates for Windows 8.1/Server 2012 R2

For Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Microsoft has released updates KB4054519 and KB4054522. The update history for Windows 8.1 may be found at this Microsoft page.

KB4054519 (Monthly Rollup) for Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2

Update KB4054519 (December 12, 2017, Monthly Rollup for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2) fixes security issues and some bugs documented addressed within the following list:
