[German]On April 26, 2018, the developers of Cannonical Ubuntu released 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) in general. As LTS version ("Long Term Support") Ubuntu 18.04 gets updates again for 5 years.

The most notable innovation is the fact that the developers have removed the Unity environment and Wayland. Instead, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) relies (again) on the Gnome desktop and X servers for graphics output.

Meltdown and Spectre protection, but telemetry
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS uses the Linux kernel 4.15, which already has integrated protection against Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities (see this announcement from Canonical).
The downer: From Ubuntu 18.04 Cannonical wants to collect certain selected user data. I had pointed out the facts in February 2018, see Ubuntu 18.04 becomes a telemetry data collector. I've addressed this in February 2018 within my German blog post Ubuntu 18.04 wird zum Telemetriedatensammler. Bleeping Computer have had also an article (in English) about that.

Martin Brinkmann has published on ghacks.net this (English) blog post dealing with 'what's new'. For instance, the desktop version doesn't provides a 32 bit installer anymore. The announcement of Ubuntu 18.04 with more details can be found on this Cannonical page. Release notes may be obtained here.
