I've stumbled across a tweet a few days ago that gives an overview of the availability of security updates for smartphones. The table is from January/February 2018 and also lists Windows Phone. Nevertheless, the whole table is quite revealing.

Android can only be described as broken with regard to security updates and the length of the update period. Apple doesn't do so badly with iOS – but not every user will want to join the golden cage of this manufacturer. So you have the choice between pest (golden, expensive Apple cage) or cholera (Android platform not supplied with security updates).
