German blog reader Tom mentioned it in this comment (thanks for that). Of course I immediately tested with my old version 68.4.2, and was offered the new version.
During a quick check the update installed without any issues and I could not detect any errors. In the last updates of Thunderbird it once set my calendar to read-only, so I could not change any appointments. This could be changed via context menu. But when updating to 68.4.2 I lost all calendar entries and had to enter them again. This time the entries have been preserved.
If you are still using the old 60's version of Thunderbird, this update is now also available. According to the release notes the above statement is confirmed (but was already so with version 68.3.1).
Thunderbird version 68.5 provides an automatic update from Thunderbird version 60. If you have installed Lightning, Thunderbird's calendar add-on, it will automatically be updated to match the new version of Thunderbird. Refer to this Calendar troubleshooting article in case of problems.
The following changes have been made in the new version of Thunderbird:
- Support for the Client Identity IMAP/SMTP Service Extension
- OAuth 2.0 authentication support for POP3 accounts
Furthermore, the following fixes have been made in the version:
- Status area goes blank during account setup
- The calendar: Could not remove the color for default categories
- The calendar: Prevent multiple loading of calendar components
- The Calendar: The Today section did not maintain the width between sessions.
The readme also states that there have been security fixes. These are listed on this page. One fix is rated 'high', while the other fixes are rated moderate or low.

Known issue: When upgrading from Thunderbird version 60 to version 68, add-ons are not automatically updated during the upgrade process. However, they are updated during the add-on update check. It is of course possible to reinstall compatible add-ons via the Add-On Manager or via addons.thunderbird.net.
The system requirements for the different operating system versions (see also):
- Windows: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or higher
- Mac: Mac OS X 10.9 or higher
- Linux: GTK+ 3.4 or higher
The download is available here. Thunderbird is free.
