When will Windows 10 May 2020 Update (Version 2004) be rolled out to the general public? May 2020 is probably already set, if the official name 'Windows 10 May 2020 Update' should still make any sense. The development is finished, and I had reported in the article Windows 10 V2004 is ready, rollout for Insider that Microsoft is preparing this branch for the general rollout. Distribution to Insider started in April 2020. Now there are only cumulative updates for bug fixing for Windows Insider. Currently, build 19041.208 is supposed to be the 'final', as Microsoft announced the days (see Windows 10 V2004 (Build 19041.208 in Insider Slow Ring)).

Date May 12. 2020 postponed to Mai 28.

One could now have speculated on 12 May 2020 as the date for the general availability of Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004). This is the second Tuesday of the month, Patchday at Microsoft – a way to make the feature update more widely available. In my opinion, Microsoft should not combine such a rollout with Patchday. At ZDNet, Mary Foley reported in mid-April 2020 the following dates :

  • Release to OEMs/RTM: April 28, 2020
  • Availability to developers: April 28, 2020
  • General Availability: May 12, 2020

Indeed, the date of May 12, 2020 appeared there as the date for general availability. But now Foley has updated her article on April 30, 2020. According to Foley, the above dates were postponed by Microsoft, possibly because the team wanted to patch a zero-day exploit before releasing the code to OEMs and users. Foley claims to have heard that OEMs will now receive Windows 10 version 2004 on May 5. For developers, the release date is May 12, and general availability is planned for May 28, Foley said.

That would be the last Thursday in May 2020 when the rollout could start. Again, Microsoft has not officially announced this, and these dates could change again. In times of the coronavirus pandemic, one is not immune to further surprises and delays. In addition, Microsoft is using a phased rollout anyway, with only a few users getting the new Windows 10 version.

Let's see when the function update to Windows 10 May 2020 Update (Version 2004) will really be released and if the included bugs will still be fixed. Woody Leonhard has also provided some hints on bugs in the 2004 version in this article (dealing with patchday issues from April 2020).
