According to the release notes, Thunderbird version 78.2.0  is only offered as a direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 68 or earlier. A future version will include updates from previous versions. Automatic updates are available for users who are already running version 78.0 or higher. An upgrade from version 68 is not available.

Add-on support

Starting with version 78.0 Thunderbird supports only MailExtensions. Add-ons preferred by users may not have been updated for compatibility reasons. At this time, users of the Enigmail add-on should not update to Thunderbird 78.

Originally it was announced that OpenPGP in version 78.2.0 would be enabled by default. It was decided to postpone this a bit for final changes and testing by volunteers. Please refer to the wiki for instructions on how to activate and for help with testing.
