Firefox 80.0.0 and 78.2.0 esr released

Mozilla[German]Mozilla's developers have released the Firefox browser version 80.0.0, as well as 78.2.0 esr on August 25, 2020. Firefox 80 is a new development branch, which is intended to fix both vulnerabilities and bugs.

In the comments German blog reader 1ST1 pointed out that version 80 and esr have been released. There is also an article on Bleeping Computer about this topic.  

Firefox 80.0.0

The release notes for Firefox 80.0.0 say, that this version should fixe some bugs and contain some new features:

Firefox can now be set as the default system PDF viewer.

The name reported by accessibility tools for items in multi-tiered tree controls no longer incorrectly includes information from items at deeper levels, providing users with the correct level of content when using a screen reader:

  • Several crashes while using a screen reader were fixed including a frequently encountered crash when using the JAWS screen reader.
  • Firefox Developer Tools received significant fixes allowing screen reader users to benefit from some of the tools that were previously inaccessible.
  • SVG title and desc elements (labels and descriptions) are now correctly exposed to assistive technology products such as screen readers.

For users with reduced movement settings, the developers have reduced a number of animations such as tab loading to reduce movement for users with migraines and epilepsy. In addition, the new add-on block list has been activated to improve performance and scalability.

A number of bug fixes and new policies were implemented for the enterprise environment. Further details can be found in the Firefox for Enterprise 80 release notes.  Additionally, some vulnerabilities from previous versions that were rated as high and moderate have been closed. 

Firefox 78.2.0 esr

An update of Firefox 78.2.0 esr with one year long term support was also offered with the same bug fixes and eliminated vulnerabilities. Firefox 78.2.0 esr can be downloaded from this website. The updates are also available for direct download.
