Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20231: Tailored Setup

[German]Microsoft has released the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20231 for Windows Insider in the Developer Channel on October 7, 2020. A customized installation with some Insiders is also tested. In addition, this Windows 10 Build is available for download as an ISO installation image.

The announcement of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20231 was made in the Windows Blog, where you can read the list of new features, fixes and known issues. Here is a short summary of the new features.

Improve relevance of initial setup

Microsoft has noticed slowly that many PCs with Windows 10 are used for certain scenarios. There are game PCs, devices for working in the office or for design tasks, a school PC etc. Based on feedback, Microsoft is currently considering whether to add a page to the Windows Setup (OOBE) for initial setup (or when resetting Windows 10). This will allow users to specify the intended use of the system so that the initial setup can be improved.

Depending on the selection, users may later be offered different options for setting up Windows 10. This function is first made available to a subgroup of insiders in the dev channel. With this A/B test, Microsoft wants to identify problems that could affect performance and reliability in advance.

Management of App default file associations

Enterprise customers can now change file associations on a user or device basis. This change applies to both existing users and users with new implementations. This means IT administrators can specify which applications automatically open different file types or links.

For example, Microsoft Edge can be set as the default browser for the enterprise organization or PDF files can always be opened in the company’s preferred application. Using this group policy for the default browser and common file types means that the company’s end users do not have to decide on these default settings themselves. Again, the rollout is done as an A/B test with different users.

ISO installation image

In the blog post, Microsoft also announced that an ISO installation image of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 20231 will be available for download. This allows a new installation of this Insider Preview build. Windows Insiders can download the ISO file from this Microsoft site.
