Updates for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2

For Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 a rollup and a security-only update have been released. However, these updates are only available for systems with ESU license. The update history for Windows 7 can be found on this Microsoft page.

Starting January 15, 2020, Windows 7 will display a full-screen notification of the end of support in Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional (without ESU license) and Ultimate. This must then be closed by the user.

As of January 14, 2020, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 have reached the end of support and will in future only receive paid security updates as part of the ESU program. ESU license holders are advised to take a look at the Windows Message Center for details.

The Techcommunity article on the ESU program was last updated by Microsoft on 3.10.2020. Please refer to the notes on requirements (SSU, SHA-2). In addition, for ESU systems, update KB4538483 must be installed manually from the Update Catalog. And update KB4575903 was released at the end of July 2020.

Since the updates are offered in the Microsoft Update Catalog, do not try to install them on systems without an ESU license. The installation fails and a rollback is performed. But what works: Using the BypassESU methods (see Windows 7: Forcing February 2020 Security Updates – Part 1). ByPassESU v9 still works for the October 2020 patches (see).

Important: Starting in July 2020 all Windows updates disable the RemoteFX vGPU features due to vulnerability CVE-2020-1036 (see also KB4570006). After installing this update, attempts to start virtual machines (VM) with RemoteFX vGPU enabled will fail.

KB4580345 (Monthly Rollup) for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2

Update KB4580345 (Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1)  contains (besides the security fixes from last month) improvements and bug fixes and addresses the following:

  • Addresses an issue that might cause the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) to access internal regions incorrectly causing unexpected UI experiences. This issue can cause additional or missing screen elements, screen flickering, or a trailing screen.
  • Corrects the end date for daylight savings time (DST) in 2021 for the Fiji Islands. For more information, see DST correction in Windows for the Fiji Islands: October 13, 2020.
  • Addresses an issue where Group Policy recursively deletes critical files when the "Delete local user profile policy" is enabled.
  • Addresses an issue in which a Null port is created through the user interface.
  • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Graphics, Windows Shell, Windows Silicon Platform, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, Windows Core Networking, Windows Network Security and Containers, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows SQL components, and Windows Remote Desktop.

Compared to the previous months, nothing has changed for ESU systems. This update is automatically downloaded and installed via Windows Update. The package is also available from the Microsoft Update Catalog and is distributed via WSUS with details on requirements and known issues (without ESU, installation fails and there is a "STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)" error). And there is a second known error: After installing this update and restarting your device, you may receive the error message "Failure to configure Windows updates. Undo changes. Do not turn off your computer" is displayed. The update may appear as Failed in the update history. Occurs when an ESU license is not in use, or if there are problems with the keys. See the KB article for details.

KB4580387 (Security Only) for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2

Update KB4580387 (Security-only update) is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 with ESU license. The update addresses the following issues.

  • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Graphics, Windows Shell, Windows Silicon Platform, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Authentication, Windows Virtualization, Windows Core Networking, Windows Network Security and Containers, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows SQL components, and Windows Remote Desktop.

The update is available via WSUS or in the Microsoft Update Catalog.  To install the update, the preconditions listed in the KB article and above for the rollup update must be met. The update has the known errors described in the KB4580345 update. I have not found a security update for IE 11 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
