Windows 10 V2004/20H2: All upgrade blocks removed (May 2021)

Windows[German]Good news for people who are still stuck on Windows 10 version 1909 because something is stuck and the feature update to the successor versions 2004 or 20H2 was denied. It should now work with the feature update, because Microsoft has now removed all upgrade blockers related to Conexant audio drivers for these Windows 10 versions.

Microsoft keeps a list of known isseus in the Windows 10 status area, which may prevent an upgrade to new versions and for which an upgrade blocker has been set. The affected users will then receive a notification in Windows Update that the upgrade to the new build is not yet available. In the blog post Windows 10: Find out the reason for blocked feature updates  I had described how to find out more about the cause of the denied upgrade.  However, as of May 7, 2021, the last two remaining upgrade issues for Windows 10 version 2004 or 20H2 have been marked as resolved.

Conexant/Synaptics audio driver blockade removed

Synaptics and Microsoft had identified compatibility issues with certain driver versions for Conexant or Synaptics audio devices and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). This caused a stop error (BlueScreen) on Windows 10 devices with these affected Conexant or Synaptics audio drivers after updating to Windows 10, version 2004 (or 20H2).

The driver named Conexant HDAudio Driver, which can be found under Sound, Video and Game Controllers in the Device Manager, was affected. Specifically, the versions 8.65.47.53, 8.65.56.51 or 8.66.0.0 to 8.66.89.00 of the driver files chdrt64.sys or chdrt32.sys were affected. Microsoft had subsequently imposed an upgrade halt for Windows 10 clients of versions 20H2 and 2004. The same applied to Windows Server versions 20H2 and 2004.

In a new entry in the status area, Microsoft announces that the security halt with protection IDs 25702617, 25702660, 25702662 and 25702673 has been removed for all devices as of May 7, 2021, which also applies to devices with affected drivers. If updated drivers are not available for a device and Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2 is offered, a small number of devices may revert to the previous version of Windows 10 when attempting to update. In this case, users should try again to update to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2, Microsoft suggests.

Conexant ISST audio driver blockade removed

Also, for certain versions of the Conexant ISST audio drivers, Microsoft and Synaptics had identified compatibility issues associated with Windows 1, version 2004 (and 20H2). Windows 10 devices with affected Conexant ISST audio driver may receive an error or have issues installing the update or after the device is updated to the new Windows 10 build. The affected driver is listed as Conexant ISST Audio or Conexant HDAudio driver under Sound, Video and Game Controllers in Device Manager and has the file name uci64a96.dll to uci64a231.dll and a file version of 7.231.3.0 or lower.

Again, Microsoft had placed an upgrade halt on Windows 10 clients of versions 20H2 and 2004, as well as Windows Server versions 20H2 and 2004. Again, a new entry informs that the security freeze with protection ID 25178825 has been lifted for all devices starting May 7, 2021. This also applies to Windows 10 devices with affected drivers. If updated drivers are not available for a device and Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2 is offered, a small number of devices may revert to the previous version of Windows 10 when trying to update. In this case, users should try again to update to Windows 10, version 2004 or Windows 10, version 20H2. This also brings down the last upgrade stopper for Windows 10 feature upgrades to 2004 and 20H2 versions.
