Windows Server: Out-of-Band Update fixes Remote Desktop issues (2022/01/04)

Windows[German]Microsoft has released a special update (out of band update) for Windows Server on January 4, 2022. This is supposed to eliminate massive problems that can occur with remote desktop connections. The problem actually affects all Windows Server versions, but updates are not available for all variants.

Problems with Windows Server

In a message in the Windows Health dashboard, Microsoft had admitted issues with update KB5008218 from December 14, 2021 and wrote:

Windows Server might experience a black screen, slow sign in, or general slowness

After you install KB5008218, you might experience a black screen, slow sign in, or general slowness. You might also be unable to use Remote Desktop to reach the server. In some circumstances, the server might stop responding.

At the same time, it was mentioned that there would be out-of-band updates to fix this issue.

In a message on the Windows Health dashboard, Microsoft comments on the problem and announces the extraordinary update for Windows Server.

Take action: Out-of-band update to address a Windows Server issue

Microsoft is releasing Out-of-band (OOB) updates today, January 4, 2022, to resolve issues in which Windows Server might experience a black screen, slow sign in, or general slowness on Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2012 R2. The remaining affected platforms will be released in the coming days. To get the standalone update package, search for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog. You can import this update into Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions. Note These updates are not available from Windows Update and will not install automatically.

The updates mentioned for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2019 are supposed to fix the issues in question. The updates are not distributed via Windows Update, but must be downloaded and installed manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.  (via)
