Atlassian: Jira-/Confluence outage affects customers since April 5, 2022

Stop - Pixabay[German]Atlassian's Jira platform, popular with many companies, has been down for what seems like hours. This is causing trouble for all customers who need access to the Atlassian Jira Bug System. There, information about security problems and other sensitive details are collected and processed. Currently, only a short peak was reported on allestoerungen.de as of today, April 7, 2022, since 8:23 am. However, if I catch it, the Jira servers have been down for over 24 hours.

I came across this disruption through a tweet from the colleagues at Bleeping Computer, who already point out the ongoing disruption as of April 6, 2022 in the linked post.

Atlassian Jira, Confluence outage

The service disruption appears to have existed since April 5, 2022, 19:00 German time. At that time, Jira and Confluence customers could no longer access their cloud instances. When accessing the accounts, an error message appears stating that the site is unavailable or under maintenance. I then went to the Atlassian status page and got the following on 7/4/2022 (10:30am).

Atlassian-Status

The screenshot above only shows a section, but the Jira services as well as Confluence and other services of the provider are on ACTIVE INCIDENT. For the Jira software, it says for the first time on April 5, 2022:

The status page is updated regularly, but there is no change to the disruption. The latest entry at the time of writing this blog post reads:

Update – We are continuing work in the verification stage on a subset of instances. Once reenabled, support will update accounts via opened incident tickets. Restoration of customer sites remains our first priority and we are coordinating with teams globally to ensure that work continues 24/7 until all instances are restored.

The provider does not give a reason for this disruption – so affected customers are likely to be pretty much left out in the cold.

Who is Atlassian?

Atlassian is a software solutions provider for software developers based in London with operational headquarters in Sydney. The Atlassian products and services (for example, Bamboo, Crucible, SourceTree, Bitbucket) are aimed at software developers. In addition, however, tools such as the wiki Confluence and the task management software Jira are also in their product range, which are aimed at a user group beyond software developers. Among other things, the company is also known for both focusing on agile software development and practicing it itself. Check Point says its Jira task management software is used by more than 180,000 customers worldwide.
