Firefox 103.0, and 102.1esr and 91.12esr released

Mozilla[German]Mozilla's developers have released on July 26, 2022 the versions 91,2 and 102.0 as ESR version and the new 103.0 version of the Firefox browser. Firefox 103 is a new development branch, and the ESR versions are maintenance updates.

Firefox 103.0

Firefox 103.0 is a new development branch and has been released on July 26, 2022, according to the release notes, the  update brings the new features listed below:

  • Improved responsiveness under macOS during periods of high CPU load by moving to a modern locking API.
  • Required fields are now highlighted in PDF forms.
  • Improved performance on high refresh rate monitors (120Hz+). 
  • With Picture-in-Picture subtitle feature, users can now change the subtitle font size directly in the PiP window. In addition, PiP subtitles are now available on Funimation, Dailymotion, Tubi, Hotstar, and SonyLIV.
  • Buttons in the tab toolbar can now be accessed with the Tab key, Shift+Tab, and arrow keys. For more details, see this article.
  • The Windows accessibility setting "Make text larger" now affects the entire user interface and content pages, not just the system font size.

In this German comment a reader provides one more hint of an improvement:

Under Settings – Privacy and Security finally the normal line break of the body text again, so you no longer have to scroll sideways to reach the buttons to clear the browser cache and clear history.

Furthermore, the developers have made the following fixes:

  • When copying text from a form control, spaces are now no longer wrapped, preventing automatic line breaks.
  • Fixed WebGL performance issues with NVIDIA binary drivers via DMA buf on Linux.
  • Fixed an issue where Firefox startup could be significantly slowed down by local memory processing of web content. This had the greatest impact on users with hard disk drives and large local memory.

In addition, the change SHA-1 signatures in certificates, which have long been considered not secure enough, are no longer supported. In addition, various security vulnerabilities (rating from Low to High) described here are corrected by the new version. 

Firefox 102.1 esr and 91.12 esr

The colleagues from deskmodder.de point out in this post that there are also maintenance updates of Firefox 102.1 esr and 91.12, in which the security vulnerabilities are closed. ESR stands for Extended Support Release, which means a version that gets support for a longer period of time. Firefox 91 ESR will no longer be supported after September 20, 2022, users will have to switch to the Firefox 102 esr branch.

The release notes for Firefox 102.1.0 esr and Firefox 91.2.1.0 esr only state sweeping improvements in stability and functionality. In addition, the security holes linked in the release notes have been closed.
