Windows Server 20H2 reaches end of support in August 2022

Windows[German]Another short announcement at the end of the month, which I'm not sure will reach anyone else in the readership. Microsoft Windows Server 20H2 will receive security updates for the last time on August 9, 2022, i.e. in a few days, and will then be removed from Microsoft's support. Anyone still running such an installation would therefore have to update to a successor version.

Microsoft has already been informing about the end of support for Microsoft Windows Server 20H2 since May 2022. This Microsoft page gives the date August 9, 2022 for the end of support for Microsoft Windows Server 20H2.

Administrators of such a system would then still have until the September 2022 patch day to switch to Windows Server 2019, whose main stream support only ends on January 9, 2024 according to this page. Extended Support continues until January 9, 2029, and Windows Server 2022 will even be supported by Microsoft with updates until October 14, 2031.

Why this probably doesn't matter

It remains to briefly consider why the expiration of support for Microsoft Windows Server 20H2 maybe doesn't matter at all and have no relevance. Microsoft Windows Server 20H2 belonged to the series of server operating systems for which Microsoft's management had made the stupid decision that it belonged to the semi-annual update cycle, i.e. that it had to follow the semi-annual feature updates of Windows 10 in its development. The server versions in question fell out of support after a few months (21 months in this case).

Already in 2021, Microsoft had then said goodbye to this development of providing Windows Server versions in the semi-annual channel (SAC). I had reported on this in the blog post Future Windows Server versions will only be available as LTSC. Windows Server 20H2 was the last server version to follow these Windows 10 semi-annual feature updates. Future Windows Server versions (Windows Server 2022) will then be released by Microsoft again as LTSC versions with 10 years of support. These should also be the server variants that are used in companies. Or does anyone still have a Windows Server 20H2 in use?
