[German]A small addendum to Microsoft's plans for changes to the Teams client, which I came across a few days ago. Microsoft will remove the NEW label and the reminder of the end of support from the Teams client. The background to this is the end of support for the Microsoft Teams 1.x client on July 1, 2024. There are also new features for VDI solution for Microsoft Teams. Here is the relevant information.

Classic Teams is EOL
I came across the information on X via the following tweet (published in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center under MC803890, see also), which I will extract here in a more compact form. The Classic Teams client has reached the end of support on July 1, 2024 (except VDI and Government Cloud customers).
As classic Teams will no longer be supported from July 1, 2024, users who are still working with classic Teams will receive in-app messages informing them that the client is no longer supported. I had already raised this topic in my German blog post Microsoft Teams: Teams 2.0-Client-Verteilung gestoppt; Bug in iOS-App macht Abwesenheitsnotiz zum Problem. Microsoft writes that these messages are dispensable, but will reappear at regular intervals.
Microsoft wants to remove the "New" label from the new Teams app by mid to late July 2024. At the same time, Microsoft wants to gradually remove the classic Teams client (version 1.x) from Windows:
- The Classic Teams client will no longer be available on certain operating systems from October 23, 2024. This affects Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and Mac OS Sierra (10.12).
- From July 1, 2025, the availability of the Classic Teams client will end for all users – I had already mentioned this in the blog post Teams 2.0: Deadline for switch extended by one year to July 1, 2025.
Users should update their operating system and Teams client to avoid any disruption, Microsoft advises. Users using the classic Teams Windows desktop with a Windows 10 version lower than 10.0.19041 including LTSC (Long Term Servicing Channel) or macOS versions with Big Sur (11) or lower should update the operating system as soon as possible. Microsoft recommends that you update to the gummed-up Windows 11 or to macOS Sonoma (version 14). Of course, you could also do without Teams.

VDI customers should plan to update to Windows Server 2019 (10.0.17763) or Windows Server 2022 (10.0.20348) or later to begin their new "Teams journey".
Users of Teams versions older than the supported versions (any version released more than 90 days prior to the release date of the current version) will need to update their desktop client to the latest version. I had already mentioned this topic in the blog post Microsoft Teams: Clients older than 3 months will no longer work from April 20242024 nicht mehr. Some information about the end of the Classic Teams client can also be found in this Microsoft post from the end of June 2024.
News on VDI solutions for Teams
Microsoft also published a document on the future of Teams on virtual desktop environments at the end of June 2024. I came across the article New VDI solution for Teams via a series of tweets.
Microsoft started rolling out the public preview on June 25, 2024 and should have reached 100% coverage by now. To participate in the public preview, administrators must move users to the public preview channel as described in this article. Citrix customers, please contact your Microsoft account manager to register for the public preview version.
