Attention: Windows 11 24H2 changed default settings for standby

Windows[German]Microsoft has released Windows 11 24H2 on October 1, 2024 for early adopters and will roll it out on compatible devices within the coming weeks. The new operating system cuts out some old habits and comes with changes. The default values for standby mode could be rather unpleasant. The computer and monitor go into standby mode after 3 minutes, which is likely to cause annoyance.

Windows 11 24H2 ist die least recent version of Microsoft's client operating system. It's a complet feature upgrade, exchanging the whole system during update. It can't be upgraded using an enablement update from Windows 11 23H2. The background to this is probably the new germanium system kernel.

An overview of the new features and requirements can be found here, for example. A few days ago, it became known that after the September 2024 security update, the installation of MSU packages fails with the error message "Operation is not supported" (see here).

Default for standby changed

German blog reader Christian K. had already informed me in August 2024 about the realization that Windows 11 24H2 will be rolled out with a changed default value for standby of monitor and computer.

To reduce the CO2 footprint, this default standby value is now 3 minutes, i.e. after 3 minutes the computer, and not just the monitor, goes to sleep. This also applies if the device is connected to the mains, i.e. is not battery-powered, writes the reader.

Christian pointed out to me in his email that there was a note on deskmodder.de including a screenshot. Christian said: At first I thought that a manufacturer might have made nonsensical specifications. Now I had to realize that the common denominator is Windows 11 24H2 and there is a "Reduce your CO2 footprint" screen for this.

The value is nonsensically low, so that quite a lot of trouble is already pre-programmed for users. Christian lists some knock-out criteria.

  • Computers say goodbye during PowerPoint presentations in front of a large audience
  • People drop out of conferences because they don't move the mouse and the conference software doesn't prevent standby due to incorrect configuration
  • Downloads or copying processes abort because you go to the toilet for a moment and don't want to actively wait (in the reader's experience, neither downloads nor copying processes from external data carriers prevent the switch to energy-saving mode!)
  • It shatters the computer because a BIOS update under Windows ends in standby mode

Readers can certainly think of other knockout scenarios. Administrators can change the default setting once. But users are likely to find the nonsensical "standard" easy to use again thanks to the 1-click accessibility in the settings and the "Reduce CO2 footprint" advertisement.
