Windows[English]I have come across information in various places that Microsoft is (secretly) installing the KB5001716 update on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is an update to prepare Windows so that the systems can upgrade to Windows 11 24H2 (or 23H2). Here is a brief overview of what to know about that update.

A reference to update KB5001716

I have seen from my colleagues (from neowin.net) that they mention the installation of the update KB5001716 for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on November 9, 2024. It is said to have been "secretly" installed on the systems. German site heise even writes in this article that the update was distributed on the October Patchday on October 10, 2024.

What does update KB5001716 do?

Update KB5001716 is known as the "Update for Windows Update Service Components". The update is intended to help systems that are still running on older Windows versions and for which support has expired to update to newer Windows builds. For most Windows 10 systems, this should result in an upgrade to Windows 11 if this platform is supported by the hardware. The update no longer really makes sense for many systems with Windows 10 imho.

The description states that after installing the update, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates on the device. This applies if the support of the currently installed Windows version is approaching the end of support or has already expired.

System shows upgrade issues

After installing this update, Windows may periodically display a notification informing the user of issues that may prevent Windows Update from keeping the device up to date and protecting against current threats, according to Microsoft.

End of support and minimum hardware requirements warning

For example, a notification can be displayed informing users that the device is currently running a version of Windows that has reached the end of its support lifecycle or that the device does not meet the minimum hardware requirements for the currently installed version of Windows.

  • Windows 10, Version 21H1
  • Windows 10, Version 20H2
