Discord Database probably leaked – accounts blocked (Dec. 2024)

Sicherheit (Pexels, allgemeine Nutzung)[German]Last Friday (20. Dec. 2024) some Discord users are founding out that their Discord accounts have been locked. The received a mail about that and a password reset helps to regain access to the service. If my information is correct, this could be related to a Discord data leak or hack, because someone claimed that.

Discord is an online service for instant messaging, chat, voice conferencing and video conferencing that was originally created for computer gamers, but is now increasingly being used for other areas as well.

Discord accounts blocked

German site Golem reported in this article, that Discord accounts of numerous users were unexpectedly blocked overnight. Those affected were given spam and/or abuse as the reason and received the message "We have determined that your account violates our Terms of Service or Community Guidelines" by email. Below is a German post on X.

Discord ban

According to the cited mail text, Discord also names possible causes for the blocking measure – such as the extremely fast execution of various actions in a short period of time, the automated use of the account and involvement in fraudulent activities. Users can change the password and should be able to access the account again. But it is definitely annoying and frightening for those affected. Golem states that the reason is unknown. However, I have a different suspicion for the current blocks, but I may be wrong.

Account Dark Web Intelligence reveals some more information in the article Alleged Discord Database Leak Raises Significant Security Concerns. According to reports, a Discord database containing official account passwords from December 2024 has been leaked.

Affected users are advised to update their passwords immediately, enable multi-factor authentication and be wary of phishing attempts. Discord has not yet released an official statement on the security breach and its impact.

This incident raises serious concerns about the security of user data and potential vulnerabilities of the platform. To me, this incident would explain the bans.

Or has age verification struck?

It could also be that an age verification error has occurred. On December 20, 2024, Discord support published the post Help! I'm old enough to use Discord in my country but I got locked out? It states that Discord is experimenting with new methods that users can select to verify their age and unlock their account.
