[German]Question for Windows 10 users with Windows 10 22H2 who use apps from the Store. Do you also have the situation that certain apps are no longer updated but run into an error? A blog reader brought the issue to my attention and also provided details. However, it could be an isolated case. I'll summarize some information below.

A reader's note
Blog reader Christian O. runs a system with Windows 10 22H2 (x86) and also uses apps from the Store. So far so normal. Now he wrote in a personal message on Facebook that there have been problems "for some time" with updating certain apps in the Windows Store under Windows 10 22H2 (x86).
The photo above shows the error. Microsoft reports an error when updating the "Mail and Calendar" app, but only gives general statements of the type "An error has occurred" and offers a Try again button.
In the case of the Mail and Calendar app, it is of course the case that it will no longer be supported on 31.12.2024 and will be replaced by the new Outlook app. But the reader wrote in his message about several apps that are no longer receiving updates.
The reader blames the update problem with the apps on certain Windows updates. According to Christian, the error when updating the apps has reproducibly occurred at least since the Windows 10 December update (12-2024). The reader suspects that the problem may have existed before that. I got later a 2nd feedback from another blog reader confiming similar issues on a temporary base.
AppxSvc crashes via ucrtbase.dll
The reader then started a diagnosis of the error and found what he was looking for. According to the event log, AppxSvc crashes with a ucrtbase.dll error message (error code 0xc0000409) as soon as an attempt is made to update the apps via the Microsoft Store.

The error code 0xc0000409 probably stands for STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN, caused in the specified module. According to this website, the error code 0xc0000409 can be caused by an improperly installed application. The remedy may be to uninstall and reinstall the application.
Possible repair approaches
But it could be isolated cases – or has anyone else from the blog readership observed this behavior? What I would try in this case would be the following approaches.
- Try creating a new user account and check whether the error also occurs there.
- Check Windows for damaged files using sfc /scannow and dism and have them repaired (see Check and repair Windows system files and component store).
And if necessary, you can try an inplace upgrade by restarting the current Windows version from an installation medium via setup.exe from a running but damaged Windows and "installing Windows over the running OS".
Similar case from MS Answers
In the Microsoft Answers forum there is the entry StartMenuExperienceHost crashes from June 2025, which also addresses a crash in ucrtbase.dll with the error code 0xc0000409 for Windows 10. There, however, it concerns the StartMenuExperienceHost of the Start menu. In this case, the problem solved itself with the October 2024 updates for Windows 10 22H2.
