Windows[German]Brief information for users who use the Remote Desktop app for Windows (e.g. because the RDP connections do not work). It has just been announced that Microsoft will discontinue the Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. It will be replaced by the "Windows app", which will come from the Store.

Microsoftannounced the discontinuation of the Remote Desktop app on March 10, 2025 in the blog post Windows App to replace Remote Desktop app for Windows.

Remote Desktop App

As of May 27, 2025, the Remote Desktop app for Windows from the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation.

Connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app (still available in the Microsoft Store) will also be blocked after May 27, 2025.

Switching to the Windows app is mandatory

Switching to the Windows App is mandatory to continue to have access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box. Microsoft advertises that the Windows app offers several improvements over the Remote Desktop app for Windows:

  • Unified access to multiple Windows services, including cloud PCs and virtual desktops, from a single, optimized interface.
  • Customizable home screens, support for multiple monitors and dynamic screen resolutions.

According to Microsoft, the new Windows app offers improved features such as device redirection, optimizations for Microsoft Teams and easy account switching. In the blog post, Microsoft also provides some tips in an FAQ on what is important when switching.

  • Remote desktop users: If this clientele uses the Remote Desktop app to connect to a remote desktop, Microsoft says to use the remote desktop connection from Windows until support for this connection type is available in the Windows app. However, if I interpret it correctly, there are massive problems with the RDP connection (see e.g. Windows 11: Still RDP issues (Feb. 2025)?).
  • Remote Desktop Services users: Those users connecting to Remote Desktop Services from the Remote Desktop app should use RemoteApp and Desktop Connection until support for this connection type is available in the Windows app.

The FAQ then refers to the support article Known issues and limitations of Windows App. There is a long list of known issues and details of what is not supported. Indicates to me that there will be no "smooth" switch.
