Microsoft increases prices for on-premises servers and Power BI

Power BI is getting more expensive

On April 2, 2025, I came across the article Data doesn't lie, but Microsoft's new Power BI prices might make you cry at The Register. The message is that some price tiers for Microsoft's Power BI are increasing by up to 40 percent.

Should be no surprise, even though the new prices will apply from April 1, 2025. But it's not an April Fool's joke, because the increases were announced on November 12, 2024. Power BI Pro subscription increased from 10 US dollars per user per month to 14 US dollars (40 percent). Power BI Premium Per Use (PPU) has risen from 20 US dollars to 24 US dollars per user per month (20 percent).

Existing customers will keep their existing subscription prices until their contract is renewed. New customers will have to pay the new prices when they take out a subscription. Everything is getting more expensive and US President Trump is increasing tariffs as part of "Freedom Day". The EU's countermeasures are not yet known, but there may also be a "surcharge" for such subscriptions.

However, The Register writes in its article that customers have alternatives. One of these is to switch to Microsoft Fabric, which is billed via a capacity-based licensing model and includes Power BI.

Microsoft points out that there are no price changes for customers who purchase Power BI through Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 subscriptions with an annual term and annual billing. But an E5 plan is already quite expensive and only interesting for large companies. Could be interpreted as driving customers to Microsoft 365 or Fabric. Of course, it would also be possible to do without PowerBI and use other solutions from the competition.

Price increase for on-premises servers

On April 3, 2025, Microsoft published the article Licensing and pricing updates for on-premises server products coming July 2025(via), in which price increases for on-premises servers are announced for July 1, 2025.

Microsoft is increasing the price of standalone on-premises server products (SharePoint Server, Exchange Server and Skype for Business Server) by 10%. Microsoft writes that this price increase is being implemented "to support ongoing maintenance and updates for Microsoft's on-premises server products.

Prices for our Core CAL Suite and Enterprise CAL Suite, which have been static for some time, will increase by 15% and 20% respectively. These price changes will take effect on July 1, 2025.
