Windows 10/11: Preview Updates April 22 and 25, 2025

Windows[German]Microsoft has released optional cumulative (preview) updates for Windows 10 22H2 (KB5055612) and Windows 11 22H2-23H2 (KB5055629) on April 22, 2025. Addendum: The optional cumulative (preview) update for Windows 11 23H2 (KB5055627) was released on April 25, 2025. These updates contain fixes that can be tested and are then generally rolled out as fixes in the following month. It should be noted that preview updates must be manually initiated for download and installation by default (although Windows 11 22H2 and later contains options for automatic installation).

Preview Update for Windows 11 24H2

The list of updates for Windows 11 can be viewed at Microsoft. No preview update was released for Windows 11 version 24H2 on April 22, 2025. Preview Update KB5055627 was released instead on April 25, 2025. It provides new features and fixes for this Windows version.

Microsoft refers to the improvements and fixes as highlights and a gradual rollout (not available for all users) as well as a normal rollout (for all users). The following bug fixes are planned for the normal rollout:

  • [Blue screen error] Fixed: This update resolves an issue observed after installing the April 2025 Windows security update and restarting the device. Affected devices encountered a blue screen exception with error code 0x18B indicating a SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR.
  • [Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP Client)] Fixed: This update addresses an issue affecting internet connectivity on devices after resuming from sleep mode. Users might experience intermittent internet connections.
  • [File Systems] Fixed: This update addresses an issue when the operating system stops unexpectedly, and an error message appears on a blue screen during normal usage with a user profile redirected to a network VHD(X).
  • [Imaging] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where some content pages with JPEG images were not displaying.
  • [Windows Hello] Fixed: This update addresses an edge case issue where Windows Hello doesn't work on devices with specific security features enabled, preventing users from logging in with facial recognition or PIN. This issue was observed after performing a Push button reset or Reset this PC from Settings > System Recovery and selecting Keep my Files and Local install.
  • [Windows Setup] Fixed: If you install Windows 11, version 24H2 with Windows Setup and run System Preparation (Sysprep) afterwards, the boot file configuration is not properly updated, resulting in push-button reset options not working.
  • [Windows Update] The Windows Update settings page and the Start menu power button will now show an estimated time for how long your PC will be offline to install updates from Windows Update.

For Copilot+PCs, the controversial recall function will be delivered as a preview. Click to Do will also be available as a preview on these PCs. Furthermore, the search function will be improved and Phone Link will be added. In the EU and EEA, widgets will be displayed on the lock screen, and much more. The update is offered via Windows Update, but can also be downloaded and installed from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The latest Servicing Stack Update (SSU) is integrated to fix various issues. Preview update KB5055629 for Windows 11 22H2 – 23H2

The list of updates for Windows 11 23H2 can be viewed at Microsoft. The preview update KB5055629 has been released for Windows 11 version 23H2 and 22H2. It provides new features and fixes for this Windows version. Microsoft refers to the improvements and corrections for 23H2 as highlights and a gradual rollout (not available for all users) as well as a normal rollout (for all users).

Microsoft points out that for Windows 11 23H2 the CoPilot will be introduced in a preview on selected global markets (North America and parts of Asia and South America). Further markets will be added later.

  • [Server Message Block (SMB)] Fixed: An issue where an Excel file, hosted on a SMB file share with Access Based Enumeration enabled, containing links to multiple other files hosted on network shares, might take longer to open.
  • [Sign in Impact] Fixed: An issue affecting the USBxHCI controller and all devices that connect to your computer using a USB port on Intel(R) Core(TM) Ultra 200V Series Processors. The built-in USB camera won't work with Windows Hello sign-in unless you manually disable Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). To turn off ESS, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Additional settings > Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader > toggle switch ON. If you create a Windows Hello container while using Windows 11, version 23H2, it might prevent you from using ESS after you upgrade to Windows 11, version 24H2
  • [Xbox] ​​​​​​​
    • This update addresses an issue affecting Xbox Elite Wireless Controllers with certain firmware versions, where the keyboard might not function and displays an error indicator in the device manager.
    • Fixed: The driver verifier stops responding during gamepad controller driver certification, affecting Windows Hardware Quality Labs testing.​​​​​​​
  • [Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist file (DriverSiPolicy.p7b)] This update adds to the list of drivers that are at risk for Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.

Windows 10 Preview Update KB5055612

Information on Windows 10 updates can be found on the Windows 10 update history page. The cumulative preview update KB5055612 is available for Windows 10 version 22H2 (all versions). According to the support article, there are the following corrections that will be included in the security update for the following month.

  • [Graphics] Fix: The check for GPU paravirtualization was case-sensitive in Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 (WSL2). This issue might potentially cause GPU paravirtualization support to fail.
  • [OS Security] Updates to the Windows Kernel Vulnerable Driver Blocklist (DriverSiPolicy.p7b). Additions have been made to blocklist drivers with security vulnerabilities that have been used in Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver (BYOVD) attacks.
  • [System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service (Known issue)] Fixed: The Windows Event Viewer might display an error related to SgrmBroker.exe, on devices that have installed Windows updates released January 14, 2025, or later. This error can be found under Windows Logs > System as Event 7023, with text similar to 'The System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service terminated with the following error: %%3489660935'.

The update is optional and is offered via Windows Update if the user explicitly searches for updates on the Settings page and then selects the optional update for download and installation.
