Microsoft has already published the article PowerShell 2.0 removal from Windows on August 11, 2025. Windows PowerShell 2.0, introduced with Windows 7, was already discontinued in 2017 but remained in Windows for compatibility reasons. It will now be removed from future versions of Windows.

PowerShell 2.0 will be removed from Windows 11, version 24H2, in August 2025, and from Windows Server 2025 in September 2025—it has already been removed from Insider Previews since July 2025. All later versions of Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025 will no longer include PowerShell 2.0.
For most users and organizations, this change should have no impact – newer versions of PowerShell, such as PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7.x, will continue to be available and supported. However, anyone still using older scripts or software that explicitly depend on PowerShell 2.0 will need to take action and update their solutions. Otherwise, problems are to be expected.
