KB5063878 and the reports of SSD issues

On August 12, 2025, cumulative update KB5063878 for Windows 11 24H2 was released (see Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (August 12, 2025)). Subsequently, reports emerged from Japan that this cumulative security update KB5063878 could cause serious SSD problems. When transferring large amounts of data, reproducible errors are said to occur when saving to certain SSDs with certain controllers, resulting in data loss.

It was said that Phison's NAND controllers were more prone to these malfunctions. Since I addressed these reports in the blog post Windows 11 24H2: Does the Aug. 2025 update KB5063878 cause SSD errors? there has been much speculation about what is going on. Microsoft then investigated these reports and asked for feedback from those affected (Windows 11 24H2: Microsoft investigates reports of SSD issues caused by KB5063878).

As early as August 27, 2025, neowin.net quoted from a report by Phison in this article. The folks at Phison had come across corresponding user reports and wrote: "As stated on August 18, Phison was made aware of the 'KB5063878' and 'KB5062660' updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison."

In response, Phison spent a total of more than 4,500 hours testing the drives reported as potentially affected. More than 2,200 test cycles were performed. Phison was unable to reproduce the reported issue. And so far, no partner or customer has reported that the issue has affected their drives, it said.

Bleeping Computer quotes a statement from Microsoft that it has found no connection between the August 2025 security update KB5063878 and customer reports of failures and data corruption on solid-state drives (SSDs) and hard disk drives (HDDs). There is apparently an internal maintenance note, which Bleeping Computer was able to view, that confirms this again.

Microsoft was unable to reproduce the problem on current systems and began collecting user reports with additional details from those affected. This also proved unsuccessful. After thorough investigation, Microsoft found no connection between the Windows security update from August 2025 and the types of hard drive failures reported on social media.
