[German]Microsoft has released an out-of-band update for Windows 11 24H2 (as well as the yet-to-be-released Windows 11 25H2) effective September 22, 2025. This out-of-band update fixes a bug in App-V virtualization compatibility that affects Microsoft Office applications. Here are a few details.
Blog reader Bolko pointed out in a comment (thank you very much for that) that an out-of-band-update has been released. He wrote: "Since September 22, 2025, there has been an out-of-band update KB5068221 (Build 26100.6588 and 26200.6588) for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2."
The list of Windows 11 updates can be found on this Microsoft website. The support page states that the out-of-band update KB5068221 is cumulative and contains quality improvements. In addition to the following improvements, it also includes security fixes and improvements from the September 9, 2025 security update (KB5065426):
[Virtualization and platform compatibility] Fixed: This update addresses an issue that affects Microsoft Office applications running in Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) environments. The failure occurred due to a double handle closure in the AppVEntSubsystems32 or AppVEntSubsystems64 system component.
Please note that this out-of-band update KB5068221 is not distributed via Windows Update. Those affected can download and install it from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Note: Officially, only Windows 11 version 24H2 is listed in support article KB5068221. However, since Windows 11 25H2 has the same code base and can be activated from 24H2 via an enablement update, the update also applies to this Windows version.
