Windows Update error 0x8024001E

The error code 0x8024001E stands for WU_E_SERVICE_STOP, because a service has been stopped (see also Windows: How to decode update 0x8024…. errors). The error description is:

0x8024001E WU_E_SERVICE_STOP Operation did not complete because the service or system was being shut down.

The transaction in question could not be completed because the service or system was shut down. If a shutdown can be ruled out, the question remains as to what is causing this problem.

Internet Explorer: Temporary folder undefined

In many cases, the download of the updates fails because the path to the Temporary Folder for Internet Files (in Internet Explorer or Edge browser) is undefined. Or there are access problems with the destination folder. You can go to Internet Options of the Control Panel or the Tools menu button of Internet Explorer and then select the Internet Options command. Then go to the General and click the Settings button of the Browsing History group. Go to the  "Temporary Internet Files" tab. There is the path unter Current location and should be set to:

C:\Users\….\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\

(set via Move folder if necessary). It is important that the path does not point to another partition, because the security classification (trust level low) is usually not given there.
