Windows 11 24H2: KB5064081 fixes error in CertificateServicesClient event

Windows[German]Preview update KB5062660 for Windows 11 24H2 released at the end of July 2025 contained a bug that flooded event management with CertificateServicesClient entries (ID 57). This bug has been "addressed" with the preview update KB5064081 released on August 29, 2025.

Preview update generated CertificateServicesClient events

With the preview update KB5062660 from July 22, 2025, Microsoft not only introduced AI features such as Recall (see Windows 10/11: Preview Updates July 22, 2025). There was also a bug that I addressed in the post Windows 11 24H2: Preview update KB5062660 causes CertificateServicesClient error events and that Microsoft confirmed on August 12, 2025, in the support post Error events are logged for CertificateServicesClient in the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard.

The article stated that after installing the Windows Preview Update from July 22, 2025 (KB5062660) and later updates, including the August 2025 security update, the Windows 11 24H2 Event Viewer may display an error related to CertificateServicesClient (CertEnroll). While this is somewhat inconvenient, Microsoft's reassuring message is that although the entry is there, it can be ignored.

The problem is only displayed as an entry in the Windows event log with error ID 57. The event contains the message:

The provider "Microsoft Pluton Cryptographic Provider" was not loaded because initialization failed..

Although this event is logged in the event viewer every time the device is restarted, it does not represent a problem with an active Windows component, according to Microsoft. This event is related to a feature that is currently under active development and has no impact on Windows processes. No action is required to prevent or fix this error, Microsoft said, and it plans to fix this error in one of the next updates.

Background: Microsoft Pluton was developed and first introduced in 2020 to provide Trusted Platform Module (TPM) functionality and establish a chain of trust from the chip level to the operating system. Microsoft Pluton supports the TPM 2.0 industry standard and has been implemented in Windows 11 since 2024 (see). Login credentials, encryption keys, and other confidential information stored in Pluton should not be easily extractable from Pluton. Pluton is already integrated into AMD and Qualcomm chips starting with Ryzen 6000 and Snapdragon X/8cx, and Intel is following suit with new processors (see). Apparently, this feature, which is supposed to come to Copilot+PCs, is still not fully implemented, but is already being rolled out in code fragments with Windows 11 24H2 updates.

CertificateServicesClient bug fixed with preview update

Microsoft released the optional cumulative (preview) update KB5064081 for Windows 11 24H2 on August 29, 2025 (see Windows 10/11: Preview Updates August 26,/29, 2025). According to the August 29, 2025 update to the support article Error events are logged for CertificateServicesClient in the Known Issues section of the Windows 11 24H2 Release Health Dashboard, the above issue has at least been addressed (mitigated).

The support article states that this solution will be rolled out gradually for commercial devices whose Windows updates are managed by Microsoft and for consumer devices (Home and Pro editions). The solution will be activated automatically on systems on which the preview update KB5064081 from August 29, 2025 is installed.

According to Microsoft, the rollout will happen in waves and should be done in about four weeks. After that, all future security and non-security updates will include this fix by default. Devices managed by admins in corporate environments should get this fix next month (probably with the September 2025 security update).
