Does iOS 11.0.1 fixes the Outlook.com/Office365/Exchange Mail bug?

[German]There is currently some confusion about the iOS 11.0.1 maintenance update released by Apple last night. Apple claims, that the mail bug regarding Outlook.com, Office365 and Exchange has been fixed. But I got some feedback from German users, that nothing has been fixed – and new issues occur.

What the matter?

Apples release of iOS 11 for Apple's iPhone and iPads is causing real issues with Apple Mail app, it could not connect to Microsoft's email services (Outlook. com, Office365 and Exchange). I've covered this within my blog post iOS 11 mail app does not support Outlook.com/Office 365 accounts. Apple also has some forum posts on this topic.

I got some user feedback to this article, claiming that they didn't observe any issue with Mail app. I can't evaluate that, because I don't have an Apple device that can be upgraded to iOS 11.

Some (possible) explanations

The technical explanation could be in this comment at Arstechnica. There a user wrote:

Well the issue was with http/2 being enabled by MS in exchange/windows server. That broke some in using Exchange for Office365, but not all since that changed wasn't propagated to all users yet. Once the public release went out, they rolled that back. But yes, it's crazy no one picked this up in the betas since it was a known issue since July.

Sounds logical to me, that not all users notice the bug and assume that the problem does not exist – but at some point they realize that the mail app in iOS 11 is broken.

At Microsoft's Technet forum I've found this thread (independent of iOS 11) from February 2017, which deals with the problem of connecting macOS and iOS to Exchange Server and deals with the topic HTTP/1.1 versus HTTP/2.0 under Exchange Server. Someone there specifies a registry entry as a fix. Simply use the following key in the registry editor under Exchange Server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters

an set both DWORD 32 bit entries:

EnableHttp2Tls REG_DWORD 0
EnableHttp2Cleartext REG_DWORD 0

to 0. That forces HTTP/1.1 and some users wrote, that a communication between macOS with Exchange Server was possible. But that's not an option for connections to Outlook.com and Outlook365.com. Apple needs to update its Mail app for HTTP/2.0 support is my conclusion …

iOS 11.0.1 shall fixes the mail bug  …

Yesterday Apple released the maintenance update iOS 11.0.1 for iPhone and iPad (I covered it within my German blog post iOS 11.0.1 fixt auch Outlook.com/Exchange Mail-Problem).

iOS 11.0.1

Apple also wrote within support article If you can't send an email with iOS 11 and an Outlook.com or Exchange mail account:

If your email account is hosted by Microsoft on Outlook.com or Office 365, or an Exchange Server 2016 running on Windows Server 2016, you might see this error message when you try to send an email with iOS 11: "Cannot Send Mail. The message was rejected by the server."

To fix the issue, update to iOS 11.0.1 or later.

So it seems, that the mail issue with Microsoft's mail services should have been fixed with iOS 11.0.1. Also many US sites are reporting that.

Reader feedback: Didn't work, broke my mail

At this point it gets silly. Shortly after I posted my German blog article iOS 11.0.1 fixt auch Outlook.com/Exchange Mail-Problem, I received the first reader comments negating the fix. Blog Reader Moritz wrote:

Hi, short question about to your article, can you confirm the fix with Exchange? I'm afraid not. Despite an update, the Mail app does not work with Exchange. I would be happy to receive a short answer. thank you

And blog reader Andreas wrote:

after installing update of ios 11.0.1 the email app with windows live email accounts doesn't work anymore. on iOS 11 the app worked flawless …

Having a look at my technical explanation given above, I feel, that things are messed up pretty much. Maybe some users of Microsoft's mail services are still on old account settings. In this scenario, iOS 11 works, and iOS 11.0.1 breaks the connection.

At this point I have to 'lay down my weapons', because I can't test anything. But I can ask you as my blog readers for feedback. Has anyone noticed that iOS 11.0.1 fixes the Microsoft Mail Service bug? Or does iOS 11.0.1 broke the mail app?
