What was going on?
Users of a Windows Phone 8.1 have been facing a problem for days: Apps could be downloaded from the Microsoft Store to the device. The app download from the store terminated with error code 0x80070020. Even though mainstream support for Windows Phone 8.1 has expired six months ago, apps should still be available for download from the store. I had reported the problem in the blog article Windows Phone 8.1: App download store error 0x80070020.

Microsoft forgot to renew a certificate
Now the problem has been solved and the cause clarified. Martin Suchan, a developer from Czech Republic, has informed about the cause via Twitter.

Apparently, Microsoft has failed to renew an expired certificate for the domain marketplaceedgeservice.windowsphone[.]com. The devices could no longer access the store. Resetting the time at the phone caused the certificate to be valid again. But now the certificate is renewed and the app download should be possible until October 20, 2019. (via)
